Paul Storr Entree Dish & Cover

This is an outstanding example of the work of the best Silversmith of his day.It has an elegant simplicity which oozes quality and craftsmanship.The wonderfully wrought serpent handle is detachable so that both dish and cover can be used as twin dishes.
On each side of the cover are engraved the Arms of Basset of Beaupre in Glamorgan which were a white shield with a black chevron between three bugle horns. The female Arms are those of the Miles family which were a red shield with two gold stripes from top left to bottom right.
The engraved Arms of both appear to celebrate the marriage in the Parish of St Marylebone in 1803 of James Basset (born York 1771, son of a French watchmaker and whose mother Mary was reputedly a cousin of the feted US Independence General Lafayette) and Mary Miles. It was made in the year following their marriage.
It is in first rate condition with good hallmarks to base and cover and partially marked on the underside of the handle.
It has only minor surface scratches consistent with careful use over the last 200 years.
