A most unusual Silver Gilt Table Snuff Box commemorating the Battle of Talavera in July 1809

A very collectable George III silver table snuff box by the outstanding London silversmiths Phipps Robinson & Phipps. It is in lovely condition with only minor wear. The outer hinged lid is engraved with a detailed plan of the Battle of Talavera in July 1809, showing the position of the English, French & Spanish forces. The two ends are engraved with a key to the plan. The base has a cartouche beautifully engraved with a coat of arms and the motto Deus Dat Incrementum. The Arms are most probably those of the Hernes of Tibbenham co.Norfolk: Sable, a chevron ermine between three herons argent. The crest is a heron’s head erased argent ducally gorged and beak d’or.
The box has a gilded interior and the interior base and lid are both hallmarked.
